Dealing with Feelings of Powerlessness

If we’re going to set boundaries, we must overcome the false belief that we don’t have the right to set boundaries or be treated fairly. In chapter 3, you identified your personal rights and recognized that you, like everyone else, has certain basic rights. That list of personal rights applies to both your personal life and your workplace.

However, it can be helpful, especially if you feel powerless or uncertain of your rights in the workplace, to identify more rights specific to your job. I’ve tried to list rights that seem universal, but depending on your work situation or location, your rights may vary. Here are some examples of workplace rights:

I have the right to be treated with respect.

I have the right to not be discriminated against based on my gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, age, or disability.

I have the right to be paid according to the terms agreed upon.

I have the right to time off.

I have the right to say no.

I have the right to a safe workplace.

I have the right to be given credit for the work I’ve done.

I have the right to the equipment or materials needed to do my job safely.
